"...solo voices soar out of and over the main choir and special praise is due for principal soprano, Lindsey James." "[KANTOS Chamber Choir's] tone quality and tuning are remarkable, exemplifying the best mixed choir singing likely to be heard anywhere" Sheffield-born soprano Lindsey James gained her first class degree and rigorous vocal training as a BMus student and choral scholar at King's College London. She is also an alumni of Genesis Sixteen and the VOCES8 Scholars scheme. Lindsey now lives in Bushey, Hertfordshire, where she balances a career as a freelance singer and a qualified teacher with choral specialism.
Lindsey is a core member of the vocal education collective Horizon Voices (BREMF Live Artists 2022-23, Philip and Dorothy Green Artists 2023-24), who are now increasingly in demand for private recitals and as an oratorio soloist line-up in addition to their raison d'être: music outreach. Plans are also in development for Lindsey to deliver secondary school singing workshops for The Sixteen Education in cities such as Manchester and Leeds next academic year. All too happy to return northwards as often as possible, Lindsey sings with KANTOS and is looking forward to their collaborations with the Manchester Camerata. Other recent choral engagements include recording with Philharmonia Voices at Alexandra Palace. With Horizon Voices, Lindsey is preparing for upcoming consort recitals in Matlock and Tickhill. As an oratorio soloist, Lindsey is preparing Bach's and Rutter's Magnificats (Maidstone Singers). Other solo appearances include Mozart's Coronation Mass (Fleet Choral Society), Handel's Dixit Dominus (BREMF Orchestra), Bach's Mass in B Minor (Dulwich Chamber Choir), Rossini's Petite messe solennelle (Bloomsbury Festival) and Handel's Messiah (Armonico Consort). In larger works, Lindsey has appeared at Edinburgh International Festival (Philharmonia Voices), St John's Smith Square, Cadogan Hall (London Choral Sinfonia), and the Royal Festival Hall (Philharmonia Chorus). Lindsey has a PGCE in Secondary School Music Teaching from the UCL Institute of Education. She taught and had her first experiences of choral directing at The Tiffin Girls' School, before moving on to North London Collegiate School where she is now in her seventh year as Teacher of Academic Music and Choral Lead. Having been educated in state-funded non-selective schools throughout her primary and secondary education, Lindsey will always be grateful to the organisations that supported her in her musical development prior to moving away for university. In particular, the staff at Rotherham Music Hub and at the Sheffield Music Academy. Lindsey is keenly aware of the importance of creating an impact beyond London and in the state as well as the private sector. She strives to achieve this through her outreach work with Horizon Voices, The Sixteen Education, and through the workshops that she delivers to her local state primary schools. |
